Common questions
Before you call, this might already answer it.
General information only, current at the time of writing — not legal advice. Every matter turns on its own facts, so please talk to us before acting on anything here.
What areas of law does Broadley Rees Hogan practise in?
We are a specialist commercial firm working across ten practice areas: property; corporate and commercial; litigation and dispute resolution; building, engineering and construction; planning and environment; IP, media and IT; employment and work health and safety; estate planning and wills; private client services; and Asian business services.
Where are you based, and can you act for clients outside Brisbane?
Our office is at Level 4, 247 Adelaide Street in the Brisbane CBD. We act for local, national and international clients, and a great deal of work is run by phone, email and video without anyone needing to travel. Where a matter turns on Queensland law — property, planning, body corporate, court proceedings here — being a Brisbane firm is the point.
Who will actually be working on my matter?
The lawyer you meet is the lawyer on your file. Because of the firm's size, directors and special counsel stay involved in the detail rather than handing the work down and appearing only at the pitch. You will be told at the outset who has carriage of your matter and who else will be working on it.
How do you charge, and will I know the cost up front?
We provide a written costs agreement and disclosure before starting work, setting out the scope, who will do it, the rates and an estimate. Fixed fees are available for well-defined pieces of work such as a lease, a will or a business sale. Where a matter cannot be scoped in advance — most litigation — we set stage estimates and tell you when the position changes.
Do I need to go to court to resolve a commercial dispute?
Usually not. Most disputes settle through negotiation, mediation or expert determination, and our first question is always whether an early commercial resolution is available. Litigation is a tool for when it is not — but it is worth getting advice early, because the options narrow as time limits pass.
How quickly can I speak to a lawyer?
Reception is answered during business hours and will put you through to the right person. If you send an enquiry through this site, we will come back to you promptly with the name of the lawyer best placed to help and a clear next step.
Can you help if I do business overseas, or need advice in Mandarin or Cantonese?
Yes. Members of our team speak Mandarin and Cantonese and read and write both traditional and simplified Chinese. We are also a member of the Alliott Global Alliance of independent law and accounting firms, so we can work alongside trusted advisers in your home jurisdiction.
What happens when I first make contact?
We take brief details of the matter and the parties involved so we can run a conflict check, then put you with the right lawyer for an initial discussion about what you are trying to achieve. If we can act, you receive a costs agreement setting out scope and fees before any substantive work begins. Please don't send confidential material until we have confirmed we are able to act.
